1012. Zambia, 2008

Chambishi, with its 8000 inhabitants at the heart of the Zambian Copperbelt resembles to all the mining cities in the world with its miserable houses, its poorly stocked markets selling counterfeit goods, its rundown bar where the miners drink beer and play pool. But Chambishi is also the biggest Chinese investment in Zambia’s copper. Almost one thousand Chinese live in a secluded camp at the entrance of the town and they very rarely mix with the locals that regard them with hostility due to the very low wages they pay and the disrespect of security rules, which has led to the death of more then 50 workers of Chambishi in a terrible accident in 2005.
